When to Call 911 vs. Crisis Lines

Call 911 when:

  • Someone is in immediate danger of harming themselves or others
  • There is a medical emergency
  • Severe symptoms require immediate intervention
  • Violence is occurring or imminent

Call crisis lines when:

  • Someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts but not in immediate danger
  • Emotional distress requires support but not emergency intervention
  • You need guidance on mental health resources
  • You need to talk through a crisis situation
  • You're supporting someone in crisis and need guidance

Emergency Preparedness for Mental Health Crises

  • Create a crisis plan with your therapist
  • Identify warning signs and triggers
  • Keep handy a list of coping strategies that have worked in the past
  • Include emergency contacts and preferred treatment facilities
  • Keep medications list and psychiatric advance directives accessible
  • Share plan with trusted support people
