Cara McCartney
I earned my MSW in 2003 in RI and became a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) in 2009 in Washington State, I have over 20 years experience. I have extensive experience working in child welfare and supporting children, adults, and families impacted by trauma. Both my professional and personal experiences have shaped my passion for helping neurodiverse individuals and families, including raising children with autism and ADHD. I completed a graduate certificate program in Autism Studies and am certified in TF-CBT, Triple P, and Promoting First Relationships (PFR), with additional training in EMDR, DBT, CBT, Theraplay, and TraumaPlay. My specialties include trauma, anxiety, ADHD, autism, parenting support, emotional regulation, and family relationships. My treatment approach is trauma-informed, strengths-based, and client-centered. Empathy is one of my greatest strengths, and I strive to listen with openness, compassion, and understanding while helping clients build resilience and lasting change.
Approach to Therapy
Clients who work with me can expect a therapist who leads with empathy, authenticity, and genuine understanding. I recognize that reaching out for support can feel vulnerable, and I strive to create a safe, welcoming environment where clients feel heard without judgment. My approach is unique because I combine over two decades of professional trauma and child welfare experience with personal insight gained through parenting children with autism and ADHD. This allows me to connect deeply with both individuals and families navigating complex emotional and behavioral challenges. I tailor therapy to each client’s unique needs using evidence-based and relationship-focused approaches that foster trust, resilience, emotional growth, and meaningful, lasting change.
